Did you say steroids?

With each subsequent visit to Clifton the reality of two babies becomes greater. For those of you keeping score at home, here are the details: 30 weeks, 5 days and Baby A is 3 pounds 5 ounces (a gain of 10 ounces in two weeks), Spud is 1 pound 11 ounces (a gain of 7 ounces in two weeks). Dr. Garber was pleased with the growth and the blood flow which is consistent in both. Alison (ultrasound lady) noted that Spud now has a small bit of fluid in the belly, but Garber was not concerned. As long as the growth is good and the blood flow does not worsen, he is willing to keep going. As Jeanine was having her blood pressure checked in the hallway outside the exam room Dr. Garber was telling another patient that he would be inducing her today. Jeanine and I both looked at each other recognizing that could be us any one of these visits. In the words of the great Shaggy, "Zoiks!" The other highlight of today's visit was the shot of steroids Jeanine received - the first of two; the second we have to go back for tomorrow. I double checked the doctor's name - yep, Andrew Garber, not Victor Conte - who said he does this for all multiples since it helps their lung development. The nurse said that the shot typically also causes a sleepless night for mom. We'll see how that goes. And I'll be keeping a close eye on Jeanine's church softball statistics.

I've posted some pictures of the babies' room which is nearing completion. Jeanine and a young lady from church are working on some wall hanging stuff to add variety and eventually we'll add a second crib, but they say the two will be able to be in the same one for the first few months.

Here are this week's prayer items: 1) Lung development for the babies - since they could come any time (later rather than sooner, we hope) they need development of those organs. 2) Elimination of fluid and increase of size and blood flow for the babies. 3) The big one - that they'll stay in long enough so that when they do come, they can come home without a NICU stay required. 4) Great prayer of thanksgiving for medical insurance. Thanks for all your prayers!

Don't forget to enter your guess in the baby pool. There are three categories: gender, total birth weight, and date of birth. I'm still trying to determine a scoring system but after last week's post it's clear that the prize will be two things: 1) a Starbucks gift card and 2) babysitting - yes, we get something out of this deal, too.

  2. The nursery looks great so far! Thanks for posting pics of it, and Jeanine (earlier). I check your blog every week for updates. I continue to pray for you all. The steriods are a GOOD thing (coming from an OB nurse)....though they may cause a little cramping/mild contractions...so don't be alarmed. Hope things cont. to go well, and I'm looking forward to the day that I hear they are here and healthy (and see some pics of your beautiful little babies). Remember to enjoy every moment (both now and after they're here).

    Okay...my guess for the babies...
    I'm guessing BOYS, wts: Baby A - 5# 1oz., Baby B - 2# 15 oz. (total 8#), arrival date Sept. 23rd. Can't wait to see how close (or far off) I am. :)

  3. I love the nursery ~ it's beautiful! The rug is so cute, and I love the soon to be unveiled kite theme. I'm just so happy for good reports and solid growth and I can't wait to meet these little Broekies!

I had steroid shots with Logan as well and didn't have any side effects...hopefully the same will be true for Jeanine.

    My guesses :)

The nursery is sooo cute!! Do you have a mobile for the babies yet?? Have you had a baby shower? Or maybe waiting until after they arrive? Just curious.

  8. hip hip hooray!!! you've now officially passed benjamin's baking time and the big one (is that a rude way to refer to a baby???) is nearing benjamin's size (he was 3lb 14oz) steroids are a good thing - i often wonder if our NICU time would have been significantly shorter had we gotten steroids in a bit sooner... they attempted to give them to me but it was only shortly before ben was born so it was kind of a wasted effort... anyway - i ramble... i'll continue to pray for all of you!!! (and no guesses from me - i'm not the gambling type...) :)

  9. Jeanine-
This is Dawn (Van Gorp)Plowman. My gramma (Lee Wolterstorff) sent me a link to this blog and I have been faithfully following the progress of you and your two little ones! My husband and I had twins in February. They were born at 33 weeks and were extremely healthy(each 4 1/2lbs). I had the steroid shots as well; a couple weeks before they were born I was having contractions so I had a little hospital stay - along with the shots. I had no problem with them and was very thankful for that stay in the weeks to come...the babies were only in the NICU for ten days!
I was only on bedrest for a couple of weeks and I can not imagine how restless you must be! Still, I feel I can relate and think of you often. We are praying for you and the babies continuously and look forward to the weekly updates, your continued health and patience and their safe arrival!

My guess is that the babies are boys to be born on September 22 with a combined weight of 9lbs 3oz... can't wait to read about their arrival and see their sweet faces!
